Bunions are a deformity of the joint connecting the foot and the big toe. They can range from small to very large, sometimes even causing the toes to turn outward and creating tender and painful spots.
Similar to certain types of bone spurs, bunions very often occur as a direct consequence of flat feet. The abnormal motions of the heel area created by the flat foot will spread to the front of the foot when walking, ultimately causing bunions to appear.
With each step we take, the force of the foot should naturally land on the ball of the foot when moving forward. Because flat feet cause the achilles tendon to pull unevenly in the heel area, the force of the foot becomes tilted when walking and the whole foot motion shifts out of balance. In some patients, this imbalance ends up pushing all the pressure of the foot right on the joint of the big toe when walking. Since this area is not designed to receive these forces time after time, the joint needs to "strengthen" itself and starts overgrowing in order to withstand the pressures. And that's how bunions are born.
Once the flat foot condition is corrected at its root, the bunions will immediately stop growing. Since any enlargement already existing is unlikely to revert on its own, even after the flat foot correction, it is recommended to perform a bunion removal surgery at the same time.
Treating the condition with this approach will not only eliminate the bunion problem, but will also correct the entire foot and its motion, and therefore prevent the bunion from ever returning.
