Failed treatment: Orthotics

The most common form of treatment of flat feet has, by far, been the use of orthotics. Patients have been wearing them by the tens of millions over the years in an attempt to correct the problem.

Orthotics come in many versions, ranging from custom fits prescribed by the doctor to off-the-shelf solutions at drug stores and supermarkets. There are even a number of hyped up orthotic brands advertised on TV and at shopping malls claiming all kinds of relief of your symptoms.

The truth is that orthotics are merely a partial, temporary relief of a patient's flat foot symptoms, at best. They are not, and can never hope to be, a real cure for flat feet, since the source of the problem is inside the foot, far away from the reach of any orthotics.

In addition, orthotics can actually worsen the flat foot condition and even create problems in new areas that were previously uncompromised. This is because orthotics force the foot into yet another unnatural position in order to "simulate" a fix for the flat foot. They typically push the arch and heel into position through pressure in different parts of the foot that were not meant to receive these forces.

And finally, there's the element of cost. Over a lifetime, a patient can—and typically does—spend several thousand dollars in total costs associated with the fitting, creation, and maintenance of orthotics. In addition, a lot more is spent on premature shoe wear and on other related costs.
