Self-check

Typically, the first sign that talotarsal dislocation is present are the symptoms or side effects throughout the body in both adults and children, including flat feet, overpronation, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, hip pain, back pain, and even complications in the neck and shoulders. This is because in most cases these body misalignments originate in the feet (see our symptoms and secondary conditions section).

However, it is very easy to self-check for talotarsal dislocation by simply following one or more of the following visual examination methods:

One way is to examine the arch. If there is a lowering of the arch, commonly known as “flat foot”, then talotarsal dislocation is unequivocally the cause. However, please note that the opposite is not necessarily true. It is not possible to have flat feet and not have talotarsal dislocation, but it is possible to have talotarsal dislocation and still show a normal looking arch. In these cases the deformity will manifest itself elsewhere in the foot or body. Please continue reviewing the rest of the self-check methods for a complete overview.

Another way to self-check is by observing the “too many toes” sign. When looking at a normal foot straight from behind, only the fifth toe should be showing. If more than the fifth toe is showing, then the “too many toes” sign will be present, which constitutes an excessive foot rotation and confirms the presence of talotarsal dislocation. The core of the deformity is very evident from this point of view, since it is easy to see how the alignment of the foot and the rest of body is compromised at this important point.

There are additional ways to further check and confirm a self-diagnosis. We invite you to watch our self-check video to the right of this page to go over these and other methods to self-check for talotarsal dislocation.
